Keep your calendar within view: Outlook on the Desktop 1.4.0.0

Outlook on the Desktop 1.4.0.0

An interesting point is made by Michael Scrivo, the developer of this entry's feature:
Have you ever wondered why it's such a pain in the butt to use calendaring programs on your computer? It's simple: they don't mimic their real life counterparts very well. People who use calendars to organize their daily lives have them visible in plain sight nearly all of the time. Yet, on the computer, you have to go through a myriad of windows and clicks before you can even see your calendar.
How true. I guess I had always thought this on some level myself. Why is it that we need to go through those windows to get to something that should be quickly accessed?

Outlook on the Desktop addresses this problem by placing your calendar, tasks, notes, inbox or custom Outlook folder on your desktop in plain sight so you can quickly reference it no matter what you are working on!

OOTD will sit on your desktop at any transparency level you desire, and it can be moved around and resized to your preference. Also, you can display multiple panes...show your inbox in the lower left-hand corner, show your calendar in the right hand side, etc. You can adjust your preferences for all the various panes with ease.

Additionally, the Systray icon will display today's date - trivial, but a nice feature nonetheless.

Obviously, as the name implies, you need Outlook 2000 SR1 or newer, Windows 2000 or newer, and the .Net framework 2.0 to operate.

I'd love to see something like this for Lightning, Mozilla's calendar offering.

No support forums, but Michael does accept donations (and I expect he'll put you on his calendar to help out if you have an issue!).

*Update 03/18/08*

I received an email from Michael, and he is putting together a new site for OOTD specifically (forums will be included soon!): http://www.outlookonthedesktop.com/

First of all great article and very helpful! But, I have an unrelated question... What desktop theme is that? and where'd you get the sweet wallpaper?

I love cool designed desktops and I was curious.

Ahh - yes, I found these the other day on Deviant Art. There are some awesome backgrounds out there.

Here's the link to my leaf background artist: http://epheus.deviantart.com/

Sweet deal, now where'd you get that theme?

Sorry about the double post and thanks for the quick response!

:) That theme is called 'Sketch' and I pulled it from WinModify.Net. You need the uxtheme multi-patcher to use it -- or, you can use XPize to get the uxtheme patcher and a bit more: here
